Explores the effect of destructive cultural ideas in the failure of marriages; contemporary problematic sex-based roles and related activity that cannot provide a healthy foundation for marriage and family life, but lead instead to marital infidelity; the damaging and destructive outcomes and costs of marital infidelity; healthy foundation for marriage and family, including secure attachment in infancy and adulthood; misguided ideas of romance promoted to increase commercial profits, but which become ingrained cultural marital expectations; the character of authentic intimacy; the connections between authentic intimacy and lifelong fulfilling sexual relations; and the emotional and moral foundations of successful marital intimacy.
Perspectives on psychological science : a journal of the Association for Psychological Science. Garth Fletcher , Lorne Campbell. This article evaluates a thesis containing three interconnected propositions. Second, pair-bonding facilitated the idiosyncratic life history of hominins, helping to provide the massive investment required to rear children. Third, managing long-term pair bonds along with family relationships facilitated the evolution of social intelligence and cooperative skills. We evaluate this thesis by integrating evidence from a broad range of scientific disciplines.
First, consistent with the claim that romantic love is an evolved commitment device, our review suggests that it is universal; suppresses mate-search mechanisms; has specific behavioral, hormonal, and neuropsychological signatures; and is linked to better health and survival. Second, we consider challenges to this thesis posed by the existence of arranged marriage, polygyny, divorce, and infidelity. Third, we show how the intimate relat Yildiz Aaliyah. Sue Malta. Irum Abbasi. What causes some marriages to stand the test of time while others fail? Marital commitment is the key force underlying the stability, quality, and longevity of the romantic relationship. Commitment is strengthened in the presence of marital satisfaction, the absence of alternative attractions, and steady investments made in the relationship. Commitment is also a consequence of increasing dependence such that when partners are emotionally engaged with their virtual connections, their dependence on their significant other weakens resulting in low commitment.
Dependence on the partner increases when people feel satisfied in their relationship, think unfavorably about the quality of available alternatives and feel that they have made great investments in their relationship. Technological advancements and the ever-evolving communication mediums contribute to relationship troubles by providing access to alternatives that substantially reduce shared family time. The boastfully curated profiles of virtual connections and their overly glossed pictures may lead partners to feel deficient in their life. Previous research showed that Facebook can reduce relationship satisfaction by providing alternatives and deflecting time and emotional investments away from the committed relationship. This article examines the commitment literature and discusses how commitment is undermined in the contemporary era. Finally, marital therapy is addressed with suggestions for future areas of exploration. LouAnne Hawkins. ABSTRACT Three types of close relationships have received attention from theorists and researchers interested in self-monitoring: friendships, romantic relationships, and marriage.
Our review of this literature was organized around three phases of relationships: initiation, maintenance, and dissolution. Across the three types of relationships, consistent differences between high self-monitors and low self-monitors emerged concerning the structure of their social relationships segmented vs. integrated , the basis for choosing friends and romantic partners activity-based vs. person-based , and the orientation taken to romantic and marital partners uncommitted vs. Across all three types of relationships, however, little is known about the processes and consequences involved in the dissolution of close relationships for high self-monitors and low self-monitors.
Relatively little is also known about the processes used by high self-monitors and low self-monitors to maintain their friendships and marriages. In addition to addressing these deficiencies in the literature, theorists and researchers interested in self-monitoring and close relationships need to develop sophisticated, causal models that can account for a interaction exchanges in the relationships, b dyadic as well as individual levels of analysis, and c temporal and situational changes in the course of close relationships. The Lived Experience of Happily Married Long-term Heterosexual Couples. Denise J Grundland. The purpose of this study was to explore how happily married, heterosexual, long-term couples maintained happiness over time. This study used grounded theory methodology with an emergent and exploratory design Flick, The sample consisted of ten adult heterosexual couples who self-identified as happily married, were in their first marriage, and had been married at least 30 years.
Spouses were interviewed separately using a semi-structured interview guide. Results suggested that happily married couples go through a healthy development process by choosing their mate wisely, creating a strong foundation before marriage, identifying the changes and stressors brought on by childrearing, protecting their marital bond, learning dyadic coping, and eventually making new meaning during the empty nesting phase of their marriages. A developmental-stress model of happy marriage was proposed, which provided detailed descriptions on how married individuals achieved their healthy couple development together at each stage. Clinical applications and theoretical implications were discussed. Ivano Natanael. Facebook has become a vital part of daily living and a popular way of initiating, establishing, maintaining, and enhancing existing as well as new relationships, including illicit ones. Facebook promotes relationship damaging behaviors such as flirting, sharing intimate details, establishing emotional intimacy, and engaging in sexual affairs.
Emotional intimacy is a greater concern with Facebook than sexual intimacy. Facebook maladaptive use can lead to negative societal consequences such as social isolation, relationship distrust, lack of social cohesion, Facebook addiction, infidelity, and divorce. This paper provides a theoretical synthesis of available evidence and highlights therapeutic strategies emerging from the research.
